Wood Dragons

Description

Wood dragons, scientific name Lignum draco, are majestic creatures native to the forests of Caspia. Their appearances vary drastically from specimen to specimen. On my travels, I encountered several wood dragons, and no two were alike. They are almost impossible to spot when they are sleeping in the canopy and only give themselves away by moving. Their bodies are covered with scales that mimic the leaves and bark of the thistle trees native to the region. Mature wood dragons measure up to nine meters at the withers, while the hatchlings only measure about one meter high.

Diet

Despite their size, the diet of a wood dragon consists mostly of berries, seeds, nuts, and leaves. The largest wood dragons in the colony I observed consumed five to ten kilograms of berries and foliage each day. Though they could easily overwhelm several other species in the region, namely Vulperians, Cervidae, and checkered squirrels, wood dragons are herbivores and do not bother the other wildlife.

Behavior

Considered to be “gentle giants” by members of the local settlements, wood dragons are known to be docile in nature. For the most part, they keep among themselves in colonies of twelve to fifteen dragons. My research leads me to believe that wood dragons operate in a matriarchal society with the eldest female dragon in the colony leading the group. The rest of the colony is divided between the younger females who take on the role of the hunters, and the males who act as the caretaker of the adolescents in the colony.
